Bernard Black – Bernie is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, holding BFA and MFA degrees. He studied with Anthony Pasquarelli and is a two time winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Solo Competition. Bernie is Principal Solo Cornet with the River City Brass Band. He's also performed extensively as a soloist and clinician for more than 25 years and has served as Principal Trumpet at the Sunflower Chamber Music Festival in Topeka, Kansas. In addition to his performing duties, he is the Instrumental Music Coordinator, the Director of Brass Studies and Conductor of the Wind Ensemble at the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. He is also on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University in the Music Preparatory and Extension division.
Jeffrey Nicodemus – Jeff graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, where he studied Trumpet Performance under the guidance of the renowned Anthony L. Pasquarelli. He is the Principal Eb Soprano Trumpet with the River City Brass Band. He is also a two time winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Solo Competition and has performed with many organizations, including the McKeesport, Westmoreland and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestras and the Civic Light Opera Orchestra. He maintains an active freelance performance schedule and a private teaching studio. He is on the faculty at Chatham University and Carnegie Mellon University and teaches full time as a band director in the Pine Richland School District.
David Piecka – David began playing the french horn at the age of ten and was playing professionally in the New Kensington area by the age of fifteen. A native of Lower Burrell, PA, Dave attended Carnegie Mellon University, studying under the late Forrest Standley and receiving his BFA degree with University Honors in 1981. That year, he began to perform with the newly formed River City Brass Band and has been Principal Solo Horn with them ever since. In April of 1995, David played the world premiere of Philip Sparke's “Concerto for Horn and Brass Band”, commissioned by the RCBB especially for him. He is also in demand as a private teacher at several locations in the Pittsburgh area, including Carnegie Mellon University. David is a staff member in the Upper St. Clair School District.
Glenn Wayland – Glenn is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University where he was a student of the late Byron McCulloh. He serves as Principal Bass Trombone with the Pittsburgh Opera/Ballet Orchestra and the Civic Light Opera Orchestra. Glenn performs extensively throughout the Pittsburgh region. He is on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University in the Music Preparatory and Extension division and teaches full time in the Upper St. Clair School District.
David Knapp - David graduated from Carnegie Mellon University as a tuba student of Harold MacDonald, earning a BFA (1981) and BS (1988). During his time at CMU, he also studied with Phillip Catelinet, Byron McCulloh, and Robert Page. He has performed with many organizations, including the River City Brass Band, the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestras, the Johnstown Symphony, the Westmoreland Symphony, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble and the Mendelssohn Choir. In 1982 he joined the staff of the Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts and in 1998 was appointed chair of its Instrumental Music Department and orchestral conductor. He was the music director at the historic Smithfield United Church in Downtown Pittsburgh for many years.
